Press Release: Muslim Views Explored at Lifetree Café

SEPTEMBER 22, 2010
PIKEVILLE, KY – Lifetree Café cameras captured everyday Muslims across the country to find out what they really believe about America, Christianity, Muslim faith and values, and what they really want. Their answers will be shared in an exclusive film at the Pikeville First Presbyterian Church Lifetree Café on Tuesday, September 28 at 8:00 PM.
A Gallup Poll shows that 80 percent of Americans believe that people in Muslim countries have an unfavorable view of the U.S. And a Pew Global Attitudes survey found that 43 percent of Americans associate Muslims with fanaticism.
This week’s Lifetree Café will explore Muslims’ views of America and will compare Muslim beliefs with those of Christianity.
Lifetree representative Craig Cable said, “We discovered a number of misconceptions about Muslims. Our visits with regular Muslim people provided a fascinating peek inside a belief system that is embraced by a billion people.” Participants are invited to share their thoughts at Lifetree Café.
Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages are available. Lifetree Café is located at First Presbyterian Church on Cedar Creek Road in Pikeville, KY.
Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting. Everyone is welcome. Questions about Lifetree or the special events may be directed to Jeremy Tackett at 606-437-4578 or jtackett@gmail.com.

I watched the online preview of next week’s topic re: Muslims and was not so enthusiastic about the portrayal of Lifetree’s projected opinion of Islam/Muslim people nor the seeming predetermined outcome of the discussion from Lifetree. I am ambivalent about my participation as I have a very dear friend visiting from Saudi Arabia who is seeking mutual ground for conversation about faith. Is there any way I could screen the presentation material in advance to assure my friend we are still friendly and not trying to subvert his beliefs?
Thank you for your prayerful consideration,
Frank
Thanks, Frank, for your comments. I appreciate your concerns. Let me explain a bit about how Lifetree Café approaches this (and every) subject. This is a community forum. There’s no sermonizing. All are welcome to share their views. That’s what makes for a fascinating and informative hour. Lifetree has no “predetermined outcome of the discussion.” The film segments in this program include comments from articulate Muslims from across the U.S., and from a man who worked in the Middle East. The filmed segments are used to spark the live discussion in the room. This program has already been screened for a diverse audience of Muslims, Jews, Christians, and non-believers, who all found the hour to be fair, respectful and very helpful in bridging understanding for all. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide showings of the film prior to the Lifetree Café hour. I urge you to bring your friend from Saudi Arabia. He’ll not only gain from the experience, but his first-hand perspectives will be welcomed by the gathering. Feel free to call me if you’d like to talk more. Hope to see you and your friend at Lifetree Café on Tuesday!
Blessings,
Jeremy
